Watercolor Artist Magazine- Creativity Workshop article by Ryan Fox

I am honored to be included again with another article in Watercolor Artist Magazine. My work is featured in the Creativity Workshop section of the magazine. In this article I discussed using “photo borders” to frame watercolors. While there are many Photoshop filters that emulate this look- I figured out several ways to create these with watercolor paints.

The issue should be on newsstands soon. You can also order online at:

Watercolor Exhibition- 5 Points Gallery in Durham, NC

“Chicago Theatre” watercolor 30×22″

5 Points Gallery is pleased to celebrate the watercolor works on paper of acclaimed artist Ryan Fox. Ryan’s solo exhibit, “It’s Easier to be a Painter,” is a whimsical reference to his former career as a travel/event photographer. Ryan’s paintings reinterpret the world he views through the lens of his camera. His exhibit features distinctive scenes from home and abroad as he colorfully pushes the boundaries of the watercolor medium using a variety of techniques and surfaces (rice paper, traditional watercolor paper, and Yupo – a synthetic plastic derived paper). Learn more about Ryan and his award-winning works by visiting 5 Points Gallery in downtown Durham. Also on view is a group exhibition honoring the gallery’s six-month anniversary, “5 Points Gallery Six Month Celebration.”

“UNC Old Well” 11×15″ poured watercolor (unframed)

Enjoy an exciting array of contemporary art works by 15 premier NC artists including painting, ceramics, sculpture, fiber art, mixed media, photography and jewelry. The variety of works presented in this group exhibit offer the perfect opportunity to find meaningful one-of-a-kind pieces for art enthusiasts of all ages. The exhibits run from January 16 – February 16. Gallery hours are Thu – Sat 12-9 and Sun 12-4. Join us for our Third Friday reception January 17, 6-9pm. Free and open to the public.

Art of Watercolour Magazine

Sometimes surprises are nice! I saw this post on facebook from another painter friend- the French version of Art of Watercolour.

Guess whose painting “Machu Picchu Vista” is pictured at the bottom of the page?

However, my painting is not featured on the English version of the cover (bummer) but I do have a two page article in both versions on using resist in paintings, as well as a step-by-step demo of a large watercolor batik painting of Stonehenge.

Come to Studio 104 for First Friday in October (Oct. 4th) to see the article and painting in person. I will be on a trip to Europe but the studio will be open.

“Stonehenge Nocturnal” featured in the the Art of Watercolour
